On April 1, 2024, Prof. Dr. Roger A. Sauer has assumed the position of the head of the Institute for Structural Mechanics. His research interests encompass various areas, including Nonlinear Finite Element Methods, Adhesion, Contact & Friction, Shells & Membranes, Optimization & Inverse Methods, Fluid-Structure Interaction, Osseointegration, as well as Cellular Membranes.

With these topics, our institute is expanding its research focus to include Computational Contact and Computational Geometry. Soon we will present specific details about these new areas on our website.

The existing research topics Computational Intelligence and Structural Reliability, Scale-Bridging Modelling of Materials and Structures and Computational Modeling in Tunneling and Underground Structures, will be led jointly by Prof. Sauer and Prof. Meschke. This combined expertise enhances both research and teaching, and we are excited to thus broaden the scope of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Starting this summer semester, Prof. Sauer will teach all Finite Element Method lectures, while Prof. Meschke will continue to teach the Statics courses.

You can reach both Prof. Sauer and Prof. Meschke through the institute’s secretariat phone number +49 (0)234 32 29051 or via email

Additional information about Prof. Sauer can be found here.

We welcome Prof. Sauer at the Institute for Structural Mechanics!
